This mix contains a blend of three species with complementary soil improvement qualities: mustard, crimson clover, and phacelia. Together, they form an effective cover crop that enriches garden soil, improves structure, and helps suppress weeds naturally.

Crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) is a nitrogen-fixing plant, enhancing the soil with nitrate to benefit subsequent crops. White mustard and phacelia develop deep roots that scavenge nutrients such as phosphate and potassium, while producing a lush leafy canopy that captures carbon and adds organic matter. Together, these species make an effective green manure and natural fertiliser, while also providing a valuable food source for soil microorganisms.

The mixture is highly beneficial for pollinators. Its pollen and nectar attract a wide range of bees and butterflies, helping support a healthy garden ecosystem while simultaneously improving the soil.

Seed coverage
A 100 g packet contains approximately 25,000 seeds, enough to sow around 20 m² at a dense rate. Lighter sowings can cover a larger area depending on spacing and soil conditions. The seeds are of UK origin and are not treated with any chemicals.

Sowing Instructions

  • Scatter seeds onto lightly worked soil during spring, summer, or autumn.

  • Rake in and firm down the soil.

  • Keep well watered until seedlings emerge.

  • For maximum soil improvement, dig in the crop when plants are fully established and at least 40 cm tall.

Features on the Royal Horticultural Society's Plants for Pollinators list due to its pollen and nectar producing qualities.
