Botanical Name — Helianthus annuus

Giant Sunflower – Tall Single is a hardy annual that can grow up to 3 metres tall, towering above other plants in the garden. Its strong stems carry enormous golden-yellow flower heads, often reaching up to 30 cm in diameter, creating a striking focal point in borders and wildlife-friendly plantings.

These impressive flowers are also highly beneficial for garden wildlife. Throughout the summer they provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects. As the season progresses and seeds develop in autumn, the large seed heads become a valuable food source for birds including finches, nuthatches, cardinals, and woodpeckers.

Seed quantity

A 5 g packet contains approximately 60 sunflower seeds, enough to grow a generous crop in the garden and perfect for schools to get children involved in gardening.

Sowing Instructions

  • Sow seeds outdoors after the risk of frost has passed, or start indoors earlier for a longer growing season.

  • Plant seeds about 3 - 4 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position.

  • Keep the soil moist during germination and early growth.

  • Thin or transplant seedlings to allow plenty of space for plants to reach their full height.

  • Provide support if plants become very tall or are exposed to strong winds.

  • Allow the flower heads to mature in autumn if you wish to provide food for garden birds.

Features on the Royal Horticultural Society's Plants for Pollinators list due to its pollen and nectar producing qualities.
