Tomato - Alicante, 40 Seeds
Alicante is a popular, cordon tomato in British gardens and greenhouses for one reason: it does the job year after year - producing high yields of uniform, deep red fruit with smooth skin - why choose anything else?
The plant is naturally resistant to greenback and common soil-borne diseases. This means the fruit ripens evenly to the stem and the vines are less likely to collapse mid-season.
Seed Coverage
A pack contains 40 seeds. Under good conditions, a single plant can produce several kilograms of fruit. For a steady supply, consider sowing multiple batches over two to three months.
Sowing and Growing Instructions
Alicante is an indeterminate variety that requires support.
-
Sowing: Start from December on a warm windowsill or in a heated propagator. Sow in pots in the greenhouse from April to May.
-
Depth & Heat: Plant seeds 1 cm deep in individual pots of quality seed compost. Maintain 18 degrees Celsius or more for reliable germination.
-
Light: Keep seedlings in a bright spot to prevent them from becoming leggy and weak.
-
Potting On: Move to larger containers once the first true leaves appear.
-
Support: Use a cane or strong vertical string to support the main stem.
-
Planting Out: Move to a sunny, sheltered spot in late May or June once the risk of frost has passed. Space plants 45 cm to 60 cm apart.
-
Pruning: Pinch out side shoots that grow between the leaf and the main stem to keep the nutrients in the main plant.
-
Feeding: Use a high-potash liquid fertiliser once the first fruits appear.
-
Harvest: Pick when the fruit is fully coloured and gives slightly to a gentle squeeze.
