Carrot - Autumn King, 4 g - Approx. 3000 Seeds
Autumn King carrot seed produces one of the most reliable maincrop carrots for the kitchen garden. A staple of many vegetable patches, it forms long, chunky roots with smooth skin and a rich, sweet flavour. This classic variety is particularly valued for late harvesting and winter storage, and the roots can be left in the ground to lift as required.
Packet Contents
A 4 g packet contains approximately 3000 Autumn King carrot seeds, enough to grow multiple rows of maincrop carrots over successional sowings.
Growing Instructions
-
Autumn King is best grown as a maincrop carrot.
-
Sow outdoors from March to August, ideally at three-week intervals for a continuous supply.
-
Choose a site with light, sandy, stone-free soil in full sun.
-
Avoid freshly manured ground, as rich soil can cause the roots to fork or become misshapen.
-
Sow carrot seeds about 1 cm deep in drills spaced 25 cm apart.
-
Keep the soil moist until germination, which usually takes 2–3 weeks.
-
Once seedlings reach around 10 cm tall, thin them to 5 cm spacing to allow the roots to develop fully.
-
After germination, water less frequently to encourage deeper root growth, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely.
-
As the roots swell, draw soil up around the shoulders to prevent them turning green.
Harvest
Autumn King carrots are usually ready to harvest after around 12 weeks, although young carrots can be lifted earlier if desired. Mature roots store well and may be left in the ground over winter to harvest as required.
